NSW Natural Resources Data Framework
Draft 8 April 2003

[Thesaurus]       [Data inventory]       [Source lists]       [Custodian responses]       [Working papers]

Important - status

The listings below show the interim results of a review of natural resource data requirements and data management processes under the CANRI Data Framework project. This is a work in progress: the CANRI Board has approved its publication in draft form so as to begin the process of bringing together the full range of requirements for natural resources data from all major natural resource management programs and stakeholder groups in NSW. This information will be used to prioritise and manage the task of making natural resource data available online through the whole-of-goverment CANRI framework.

This process will be on-going. At this stage we have attempted to include key whole-of-government programs such as State of the Environment reporting (SoE) and the National Land and Water Resources Audit (NLWRA), as well as other data listings arising from groups and activities associated with the CANRI program. Draft Catchment Blueprints are being examined for data requirements, beginning with those datasets managed by the Department of Land and Water Conservation (DLWC). The sources used are described more fully below. Because of its focus on key requirements, this inventory represents only a relatively small subset of the data listed in the NSW Natural Resources Data Directory (NRDD). Wherever possible, datasets listed here have been linked to metadata records in the NRDD or other nodes of the Australian Spatial Data Directory (ASDD).

Your comments are welcome - please email CANRI.

What version is your web browser?

The links below all require Extensible Stylesheet Language (XSL) support in your browser. This approach has been necessary to streamline updating of the site as new information as added. If you get a mal-formed or empty table when you click the "All datasets" link below, your browser does not support XSL. (The page should start like this.)

MS Internet Explorer v6 Tick! XSL support built-in.
All links should work OK.
MS Internet Explorer v5 ? XSL support available.
If the links below don't work properly, download the update - msxml3sp2Setup.exe (~650 Kb) (remember to restart your browser after installation).
MS Internet Explorer v4 x XSL not supported.
Use the spreadsheet Excel links below instead.
Netscape or other ? XSL support not checked.
Try the links below, or use the spreadsheet Excel links , or email for assistance.

Thesaurus

The Final NRIMS Thesaurus for maps & data is now available. It was developed from the draft NSW Natural Resources Thesaurus Excel  which was  intended as a single classification - a hierarchy of descriptors - for the natural resource sector's maps and data.

It is based on two authoritative sources:

  • the 19 Topic Categories in ISO's Draft International Standard 19115 (Geographic information - Metadata), and
  • the Generalised Multi-Lingual Environmental Thesaurus (GEMET) developed by the European Environment Agency.

Data inventory

The links below present only datasets which have been:

  • listed in agency custodianship agreements under NRIMS, or
  • identified as a priority by one or more stakeholder groups or programs (see above), or
  • already made accessible via the Natural Resource Atlas.
The tables are sorted by custodian acronym (eg "NPWS"), number of priorities identified and dataset name.
By Custodian By Custodian View
(NRIMS core)
By Priority/Use
(stakeholders or programs)
By Scheduled Availability By "Theme"
(ANZLIC primary search word)
All NRIMS agencies:
Core now or revised:

Not core or non-NRIMS.

Priority count: Specific priorities: Scheduled to be available:

Not scheduled.

Custodian responses

Through a series of interviews with data management officers in early 2002, NSW natural resource management agencies have provided information regarding management and availability of their core and priority datasets:
