7 Project definition

7.1 Project description and objectives

The main objective of this project is to develop a facility where data sets can be uploaded by registered users and downloaded by anyone after filling in a registration form. The preferred formats for data exchange will be: (compressed) GML or shape files for vector formats and GEOTIFF for image data, but agencies can provide data is any format they like.

7.2 Inclusions and exclusions

No data projection or reformatting facilities will be provided. No authentication facilities will be available.

7.3 Related initiatives and interdependencies

7.4 Technological environment

At the moment it is envisaged that users can download data from a central facility at DLWC.

The data upload would prefferably be available to registered users, but may be restricted to authorised DLWC personel depending on security issues.

Limitations in files size need to be considered. The site will not provide facilities to create subsets of datasets. All data remains as provided by an agency.

Where agencies have their own websites they may which to serve data from their own sites. In those cases links to the agencies sites will be provided rather than duplicating the data on the DLWC site.

11 Other information

The benefits of this project to the community are two-fold:

  • First, there will be considerable cost savings involved with the process of data transfer; and
  • Second, and more importantly the ease of data sharing will facilitate maximum use of agency data in natural resource decision making process.

It is therefore expected that this project will foster strong cooperation between agencies as their individual data holdings can be made easily available to (registered) users.
