3 Abstract

NPWS will develop the ability to serve core datasets covering NPWS Estate, declared wilderness and vegetation mapping. This will allow NPWS to make continuously available up-to-date layers of NPWS Estate and wilderness datasets, as well as providing access to vegetation datasets not currently available in the CANRI framework.

7 Project definition

7.1 Project description and objectives

This project proposes the serving of the NPWS core datasets – Service Estate, Wilderness, the Eastern Bushlands database and the M305 vegetation dataset for Western NSW to the Natural Resources Atlas. At present there is no broad vegetation data layer which covers the whole state. A major part of this project will combine the M305 vegetation data set which covers areas to the west of the eastern divide in NSW, with the Eastern Bushlands Database, which covers all areas east of the divide in NSW. This will produce a consistent vegatation classification across NSW

7.2 Inclusions and exclusions

This project will enable all spatial data for which NSW NPWS has been nominated as custodian in the Natural Resources Information Management Strategy to be made available in a robust serving environment across the web. This project will not address the Atlas of NSW Wildlife data records which are being served via an existing application

7.3 Related initiatives and interdependencies

Extracts of this data have been made available to the CRA process for development of RFAs. The CRAData project will thus reference datasets served through ParksData rather than the extracted layers included in the CRA data archive.

7.4 Technological environment

Data will be stored as databases in MS SQL Server and served using ESRI ArcSDE & ArcIMS.

7.5 Prerequisites and assumptions

The project will depend on implementation of a hosting arrangement using ArcSDE & ArcIMS which have been purchased.
