3 Abstract

This project will review the taxonomic keys that exist in the Australian Museum literature and select a number to be published on the internet. In addition other data held by the Museum will be used to work up a number of comprehensive image based taxonomic keys. Both of these sets of keys will be published on the Australian Museum FaunaNet site. It is expected that between 20 and 50 keys will be presented as simple text keys and several others presented as comprehensive image based keys.

7 Project definition

7.1 Project description and objectives

1. The Australian Museum literature has many text based keys that are locked up in the hard literature. This project will select a number of these taxonomic keys and scan them into digital form and make them available on the internet. Scientists and the hard and soft literature will be consulted to determine what keys would be most beneficial to be made available on the web. These will then be scanned in and presented in simple text form.

2. Current scientific work at the Museum has developed taxonomic data which is in an unpublished format but which can be converted into user friendly web based keys. The Museum has sophisticated image capture technology which has been used previously for CANRI (2000/01) to produce web based taxonomic keys. This project will employ a person to work with Museum scientists to convert this unpublished taxonomic data into interactive web based taxonomic keys using the Museum’s image capture technology.

7.2 Inclusions and exclusions

None

7.3 Related initiatives and interdependencies

FaunaNet website through which the keys will be accessible

Master Names List is a related initiative which these taxonomic keys will link to to provide maps of the relevant species and further information on their scientific names.

7.4 Technological environment

Web based

7.5 Prerequisites and assumptions

1 full time person for 1 year. Consultant to implement keys on web site.

Proposed response

FaunaNet Website being available for linking to Ensure that current development of the Faunanet website is completed on time.
Developing keys that "work" in providing users with an effective way of identifying particular species Including an iterative testing procedure in the key development process

10.3 Quality management

Progress reports will be provided to the CANRI coordination team every two months or otherwise as required. A representative of the lead agency or organisation will attend CANRI Program Implementation Group meetings to discuss progress on the project.
