About the NRDD

"Metadata" is data about data and each listing in the directory summarises the dataset's content, quality, currency and availability. The datasets described cover vegetation, wildlife, land, water, infrastructure, air and more ...

Entries in the directory comprise ANZLIC metadata elements (Guidelines v2 2001) and NSW Page 1 elements, and include the following information for each dataset:

  • Title
  • The custodian of the dataset
  • The State or Territory in which the custodian is based (Origin)
  • The ANZLIC identifier (Unique ID)
  • A short description of the contents of the dataset (Abstract)
  • Relevant search words assigned to the dataset (Theme)
  • The general area that the dataset covers, eg a particular local government area, or major river basin, or a map sheet area (Place)
  • Contact details for enquiries about the dataset
  • The formats in which the dataset is stored and is made available, eg Oracle database, text reports etc
  • The currency and quality of the dataset

If you decide a particular dataset interests you, use the contact details to find out more. The contact person will be able to tell you how to acquire the dataset and whether or not it has a cost associated with it.

While the NRDD is a catalogue only, selected datasets are available online via the NSW Natural Resource Atlas.

Technical Details

This site forms the NSW State node of the Australian Spatial Data Directory and is implemented using the ASDD compliant Isite (z39.50) search engine (version 2.07i).  It is available via this web interface and via distributed z39.50 search on port 6668, database "nrdd".

Metadata is managed according to version 1.3 of the ANZMETA Document Type Definition (DTD) and the NSW Page 1 Metadata DTD.

More information

More information about the technical implementation of the ASDD can be obtained from Geoscience Australia at asdd.ga.gov.au/asdd/tech/.
