Title: Assessment of Acid Sulphate Soil Drainage into Cudgen Lake, NSW, 1993 - Preliminary Investigation

Custodian: Environment Protection Authority NSW

Jurisdiction: New South Wales

Description

Abstract:

Cudgen Lake in northern NSW has a history of low pH levels in its water and additionally extensive fish and prawn kills have been observed. This small investigation aims to improve our understanding of the management of coastal lands for acid sulphate soil problems. Preliminary water quality assessments were made in conjunction with hydrological data trace metal analyses, and chloride/sulphate ratios. The EPA collected water quality data in conjunction with the Public Works Dept (PWD). The PWD had several water quality monitoring stations set up in Cudgen Lake to gauge water flow, rainfall and tidal gauging. Results of this study showed extreme acidity with the catchment and very low pH in Cudgen Lake. The water in the lake was typically clear due to dissociated aluminium ions, while the sediments in shallow areas displayed orange precipitation derived from iron sulphide.
