Title: Assessment of Ecosystem Health using a Freshwater Clam (Corbiculina australis) in the Hawkesbury-Nepean River

Custodian: Environment Protection Authority NSW

Jurisdiction: New South Wales

Description

Abstract:

The suitability of the native Australian freshwater clam, CORBICULINA AUSTRALIS, has been evaluated for assessing ecosystem health in the Hawkesbury-Nepean River. Toxicity tests were conducted on C.Australis pediveliger larvae, resulting in significant mortalities for ammonia, copper and zinc test concentrations. The LC50 values (the lethal concentration of chemical to 50% of the test organisms) were calculated for 24 and 96 hours, as well as LOEC (lowest observable effect concentration) and NOEC (no observed effect concentration). The results show C. Australis larvae are amenable to toxicity tests and are a sensitive species which are comparable to other macroinvertebrates used in toxicity tests. Preliminary results are reported for the laboratory based ecotoxicological tests. Further work investigated the clams reproductive biology supplemented with field transplant experiments.
