The Illawarra Outfalls project commenced in March 1991 under the joint management of the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) and the Water Board (now Sydney Water Corporation). Set up under an agreement between these agencies, the project was conducted by the EPA and funded by the Water Board. The purpose of the project was to assess the impact of effluent discharged from the Bellambi and Port Kembla Sewage Treatment Plants on marine organisms in waters adjacent to the outfalls from those plants. In a three-part study, this impact was assessed by examining the following issues at the outfalls and selected control locations:
* the differences in invertebrate communities which inhabit kelp holdfasts
* the accumulation of metals and organochlorines by intertidal invertebrates
* the patterns of recruitment of intertidal invertebrates.
