Title: Port Kembla Dredge Spoil Report - The Environmental Effects of Spoil Disposal off Port Kembla Following Construction of the Grain Terminal

Custodian: Environment Protection Authority NSW

Jurisdiction: New South Wales

Description

Abstract:

The industrial development of Port Kembla Harbour has necessitated dredging large quantities of sediment from the harbour basin and its disposal at sea. State Pollution Control Commission (SPCC) studies were conducted prior to 1985 to evaluate effects of previous dredge spoil disposal on marine communities in the Five Islands area. Results showed an impact upon epibenthic invertebrate communities, causing significant reductions in species richness and changes in community structure. To help minimise the environmental impact, the dump site for this region was relocated to an area of 84 hectares, 1.5 km equidistant from Bass and Martin Islets. Further dredging of Port Kembla Harbour was required in 1985. Approximately 1 million m3 of sediment was dredged from Port Kembla Harbour during the construction of the grain terminal facility and associated harbour maintenance dredging. The Public Works Department (PWD) coordinated all dredging and disposal operations. They provided an onboard observer to ensure compliance and verification of the disposal procedures which included, as part of their licence, monitoring environmental effect. To this end, the SPCC was engaged to undertake a study on the fish and epibenthic communites in the Five Islands area, and to examine aspects of water quality and sediment movement.
